Long before the birth of Jesus, the site in France on which the magnificent Gothic cathedral at Chartres now stands was a sacred gathering place for the ancient Celts.  A healing well that some say was used by Druid priestesses exists to this day in the crypt of the cathedral.

A pre-Christian-era statue of a goddess and child that many in the region of Chartres knew as Isis was unearthed near the well during construction of an early church.  In an attempt to convert pagan residents to Roman Catholicism, the church named the statue Our Lady of the Underground and displayed it over the altar in the crypt.   The original statue was destroyed during the French Revolution but a replica is on display in the crypt. 

Chartres was the first Gothic cathedral in France dedicated to the Virgin Mary and contains a shawl Mary may have worn that was gifted to the church by Charlemagne's grandson, Charles the Bald.   For stories about the cathedral see the Blog on this website.

In 1996, on her first visit to Chartres Cathedral, Sharon Mehdi was startled to hear a beautiful voice speak to her of the need for healing and forgiveness in her own life and in the world.  Months later, while recovering from a near-fatal illness at her home in Portland, Oregon, she once again heard the gentle voice which asked her to be a scribe for thirty days – to write and share with others the messages she heard.  The voice identified herself as Our Lady of Chartres. The experience changed Sharon’s life and set her on a healing and teaching path she never could have imagined for herself.

In 2008, at the invitation of The Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress, founder of Veriditas and the worldwide labyrinth project, and Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D., visionary author and activist, Sharon unveiled an exquisite illuminated manuscript at a Veriditas conference in Chartres containing the messages from Our Lady of Chartres she had heard twelve years earlier.  In 2009, The Messages was published in a limited edition.
